Volunteering at Lonely Mountain Ultra

Lonely Mountain Ultra is run entirely by volunteers, and, without you, this event wouldn’t happen.  Many of our volunteers are long-time runners from the area, or local residents and groups, and many others are friends and family of our participants.  It’s a great way to share in the excitement of the event and enjoy the stunning scenery.

There are a wide variety of roles on offer, before the event and right through event weekend.  Any time you can give is greatly appreciated.  We are especially grateful to our volunteers who help over the course of the full event weekend by picking up multiple shifts. Lonely Mountain Ultra is family friendly event and you are welcome to bring your kids along to volunteer with you!

Volunteers will receive all training and equipment required for the role, along with a complimentary running buff and lanyard.

All the details are on our signup form:  your details, roles, available times, special skills like first aid training and any comments.

If you would like to bring a group to work with us, please contact us and we’ll be in touch.

If you’ve already volunteered – we are very grateful!

Volunteering FAQs

What type of roles are there?

We have lots of different roles on offer: bib pickup and gear check, on-course marshalls, aid station teams, course marking and sweepers, and general helpers at the event village.

Can I specify what I’d like to do?

The volunteer registration form will allow you to select specific roles that you’re interested in, or tell us you’re willing to cover anything we need.

Where are volunteer shifts located?

Most of the roles will be located at the event village, or on the course.  We’ll also need help in Orange ahead of time for bib pickup and some prep tasks.

Do I need a car to volunteer?

It is easiest to get to the event village or race course by car.  If you don’t have one, let us know and we’ll do our best to help out.

Do I need any specific skills or qualifications?

No specific qualifications needed, just a great attitude and willingness to help!  We’ll show you exactly what’s required for each role.  If you do have special skills that might be of use, please let us know in the comments.

Is any training required?

For most of our roles, any instructions will be provided at the start of your shift.  If specific training is needed, we’ll be in contact well ahead of event weekend.

How long do I need to volunteer for?

Shifts vary but are generally a few hours.  If you’re on one of our longer shifts, you’ll be given break times.

What should I expect in return for my time?

All volunteers will receive priority entry into next year’s event, with a discount code provided. Food and drink will be provided for longer shifts.  And you’ll have our thanks and appreciation, it goes without saying!

What do I need to bring with me?

For outdoor shifts, it’s important that you come dressed for the role and the weather.  The area can be cold, particularly overnight and volunteers can get chilly if they’re not moving a lot.  We recommend warm clothes including layers, and wet weather gear if needed.  Good footwear is also essential.  If your role is mostly in one location, such as course marshall, you may want to bring a portable chair.  If your volunteer role includes a night shift, please also bring a headlamp or torch.

We work to minimise waste at our event, so we do ask volunteers to bring their own drink bottle.  Your volunteer email confirmation will include any other details specific to your role.

When do I find out what roles and shifts I’ll have?

We’ll start assigning roles a few weeks before the event and will email every volunteer with specific roles including location and times.  If you have questions at any time, just email volunteer@lonelymountainultra.com.au
